They're all ways to answer one question — "how do I earn the next jump?" — and the right one mostly depends on your experience and the lift.
It helps to separate two ideas that get mashed together. Progressive overload is the principle: to keep adapting, you have to gradually do more than your body is used to. A progression method is the implementation — the specific, repeatable rule that decides how and when you add that "more." Overload is the destination; the progression method is the route. Pick a method and you no longer have to guess each session whether to add weight, chase a rep, or hold steady — the rule tells you. The methods below differ mainly in which variable moves first (weight, reps or sets) and how forgiving they are when you have an off day.
The simplest method: keep the reps fixed and add a small amount of weight every session. Squat 5×5 at 60 kg today, 62.5 kg next time, and so on. It works brilliantly for beginners, who adapt fast enough to add load almost every workout — this is the engine behind novice programs like Starting Strength and 5×5. Its weakness is built in: linear progression eventually outruns your recovery. When you can no longer add weight every session (usually within a few months of training), the honest move is to switch to a method that progresses on a longer timeline rather than fight the stall.
The most useful method for the widest range of lifters. You progress two variables in sequence — reps first, then weight. Pick a rep range, say 3 sets of 8–12. Keep the weight fixed and add reps each week until you hit the top of the range (12) on every working set. That earns the jump: add a small increment, drop back to the bottom of the range (8), and start climbing reps again. Because the reps act as a buffer, double progression stalls far less often than linear and keeps the load honest — you only add weight once you've genuinely earned it. A more flexible, forgiving version of double progression — and the one people find hardest to pin down, because a few variations of it exist. The common thread: instead of demanding that every set hit the same number before you add weight, you use a rep range across several sets and let the reps float and climb unevenly. Your sets might read 12, 10, 9 one week and 12, 11, 10 the next; you're chasing total reps within the range wherever a set has room. You add weight once you can reach the top of the range across your sets, then reset and climb again. The point of the "dynamic" part is granularity: fatigue makes later sets drop off naturally, and this method rewards that honest progress instead of stalling you until all sets magically line up.

Percentage-based and RPE-based methods are two answers to the same problem — how heavy today. Percentages are predictable but blind to your daily readiness; RPE flexes with it but takes practice to judge. Many strong lifters blend them: a percentage floor with an RPE cap.
