What Is RPE in Weightlifting?

RPE is the simplest way to train by how hard a set actually feels — not just the number on the bar. Here's the RPE scale, how it maps to reps in reserve, and how lifters use it to autoregulate.

RPE in weightlifting is the Rate of Perceived Exertion — a 1-to-10 scale that measures how hard a set felt, based on your effort rather than the weight on the bar. It is most often anchored to reps in reserve (RIR): an RPE of 8 means you had about 2 reps left, RPE 9 means 1 rep left, and RPE 10 means none. Lifters use RPE to autoregulate — adjusting load day to day based on how the set actually feels, instead of rigidly chasing a fixed percentage of their one-rep max. It makes progressive overload more responsive to fatigue and recovery.

What is RPE?

RPE stands for Rate of Perceived Exertion. On the 1-to-10 lifting scale, the number describes effort: a low RPE is an easy warm-up, and RPE 10 is a true maximum where you couldn't have done another rep. The idea comes from exercise science — the original Borg perceived-exertion scale — and was adapted for barbell training into the reps-in-reserve version most lifters use today. Instead of asking "what percentage of my max is this," RPE asks "how close to failure did that set feel?"

What does each RPE number mean? The cleanest way to read RPE is through reps in reserve (RIR) — how many more reps you could have done.

RPE vs RIR: what's the difference?

They're two ways of describing the same thing. RPE rates the effort of a set on a 1-to-10 scale. RIR — reps in reserve — counts how many reps you had left before failure. Because more reps left means less effort, the two map directly onto each other: RPE 8 is about 2 RIR, RPE 9 is about 1 RIR, and RPE 10 is 0 RIR. Some lifters find it easier to think in "reps left" than in an effort score; pick whichever you gauge more reliably and the math is the same.

How do you use RPE in your training?

RPE's real value is autoregulation — letting how you feel on the day set the load, instead of forcing a fixed weight whether you're fresh or wrecked. A simple loop:

  1. Pick a target RPE. For most strength and hypertrophy work, that's roughly RPE 7–9 (about 1–3 reps in reserve).
  2. Take the set with your planned load and reps, watching bar speed and how close to failure you get.
  3. Rate proximity to failure. How many more reps could you have done? Two left is RPE 8, one is RPE 9, none is RPE 10.
  4. Adjust the next set. Came in easy (below target)? Add load. Came in above target? Pull load or reps back. That feedback loop is autoregulation.

A common pattern is a heavy "top set" at a target RPE, then back-off sets at a lighter RPE for volume — so a good day naturally adds weight and a bad day naturally pulls it back.

RPE vs percentage-based training

Percentage-based training prescribes load as a fixed percentage of your one-rep max — precise and predictable, which is great for newer lifters who want a clear plan. RPE trades that precision for responsiveness: the load flexes with your fatigue, sleep, and stress. Neither is "better." Plenty of strong lifters blend them — a percentage target with an RPE cap so you never grind a bad day into the ground. If you're early in training, percentages or a simple linear progression are easier to follow; RPE pays off as you learn what proximity to failure actually feels like.
