How to Do Drop Sets

The drop set is one of the oldest and simplest ways to push a set past failure: run out of reps, strip some weight, keep going. Here's exactly how to do it, why it works for muscle growth, and the mistakes that turn a good tool into junk fatigue.

A drop set means reaching (or nearly reaching) failure at a working weight, then immediately reducing the load by about 20–30% and continuing with little or no rest — sometimes for multiple drops. What is a drop set?

A drop set is a set that doesn't end at failure. You take a working set to the point where you can't complete another clean rep, then — instead of racking the weight and resting — you quickly reduce the load and keep repping. Each reduction is a "drop," and you can do one or several. Because the muscle has been pre-fatigued at the heavier weight, the lighter load still feels hard immediately, so you keep working close to failure the whole time. The result is a lot of effective, near-failure reps packed into one extended set. How to do a drop set

Step-by-step. Pick an exercise where you can change the load in seconds — machines, cables and dumbbells are ideal.

  1. Pick the right exercise. Choose a movement where you can swap the load fast — a machine, cable or dumbbell exercise — so there's almost no rest between drops. Isolation moves like leg extensions, curls and lateral raises are the safest home for drop sets.
  2. Take the top set to failure. Do your working set at your normal weight and push it to, or very close to, technical failure — the point where you can't complete another clean rep with good form.
  3. Strip ~20–30% of the load. Immediately reduce the weight by roughly 20–30% with as little rest as possible — move the pin, grab lighter dumbbells, or slide off plates.
  4. Continue to failure. Without resting, keep repping at the lighter load until you hit failure again. Because the muscle is pre-fatigued, the lighter weight still drives you close to failure.
  5. Optionally repeat. For a deeper drop set, cut the load another 20–30% and go to failure once or twice more. One to three drops total is plenty.
Doing drop sets solo? Machines and cables are safest — dropping heavy dumbbells at failure or bailing a barbell is where injuries happen. Set the lighter loads within reach before you start the top set.
